In the small German state of Brandenburg, the Ordre de la Generosité was established by Friedrich Wilhem I, the electoral prince, on 12 May 1667. This Order was primarily reserved for royal princes and did not come into general use until eighteen years later. This was a secular military and civil order, open to an unlimited number of knights, created for the purpose of rewarding loyal subjects for their outstanding services. Although this is not the first of the Prussian orders, the Order of the Swan had been established in 1443 and did not survive for many years, the Order de la Generosité endured and changed as the Brandenburg/Prussian kingdom grew in strength.
