He was awarded the Pour le Merite for outstanding leadership and distinguished military planning and succesful operations during campiagn on the western front against the French and Belgian forces. In addition he was recognized for excellent military planning and field operations during the 2nd Winter Battle of the Marsurian Lakes in Poland. This battle lasted fifteen days in February 1915. He also received the Oakleaves on August 11, 1916. The Oakleaves were awarded in recognition for military planning and successful operations during the British offensive at the first battle of the Somme.
