He was awarded the Pour le Mérite for outstanding leadership and distinguished military planning and succesful operations of the XXXXI Reserve Corps during the breakthrough at the battle of Gorlice - Tornow, Galicia, and the defeat of the Russian armies on 2 May 1915. General von François received from Wilhelm II a handwritten note advising him of the award of the Pour le Mérite Order and offering congratulations. He also received the Oakleaves on 27 July 1917 for his actions during the Verdun campaign on the western front.
