He was awarded the Pour le Mérite for outstanding leadership and distinguished military planning and succesful operations in obtaining the necessary railroad transportation needed during the 1914 mobilization of the German armies and the transporting of 3,120,000 troops and 860,000 horses to the fronts. The award was given in recognition of his outstanding efforts in organizating the rail transportation of the Austro-German forces during the 1915 Galcia offensive.
