Josias von Heeringen
Colonel General, Commander-in-Chief, 7th Army.

He was awarded the Pour le Mérite for outstanding leadership and distinguished military planning and succesful operations during the battle of Mülhausen in Lothringen and in driving out the Grench forces from Alsace. General von Heeringen received personal telegram from the Emperor, Wilhelm II., advising and congratulating him of the award of the Pour le Mérite Order. He also received the Oakleaves a year later on 28 August 1916. He was also appointed Commander-in-Chief of the German Coastal Defense Forces.
