He was awarded the Pour le Mérite for outstanding leadership and distinguished military planning and succesful operations during the German offensive in Latvia and Estonia which began on 1 September 1917. The award was also given in recognition of distinction during the battle of Riga in Kurland on the eastern front. On 23 March 1918 he was awarded the Oakleaves for outstanding leadership and distinguished military planning and succesful operations on the western front during the German Spring offensive of 1918 and in recognition of distinction during the battle of Noyan. The 8th Army took 50,000 prisoners, war materials, and advances 40 miles into enemy territory.
