Otto Liman von Sanders

He was awarded the Pour le Mérite and the Oakleaves on this day for outstanding leadership and distinguished military planning and succesful operations against the Franco-British invasion of the Galipoli peninsula and in forcing the complete evacuation of all allied forces from the Turkish Dardanelles.

General Liman von Sanders was originally assigned to Turkey during the summer of 1913 as a member of the German Military mission during which aided the Turks in the reorganization of the Turkish Army. He was given the rank of Turkish Field Marshal and made Inspector General of the Turkish army on 14 January 1914. He was also honored with the high Turkish title of "Pasha".
