He was awarded the Pour le Merite for outstanding leadership and distinguished military planning and succesful operations of the combined Austro-German forces during several battles against Russian forces in the Carpathian mountains. In recognition of excellence in leadership during the breakthrough at Gorlice. He also receieved the Oakleaves.
