He was awarded the Pour le Mérite for outstanding leadership and distinguished military planning and succesful operations by oreventing a major defeat. On 12 November 1914, the German 9th Army was in danger of being surrounded and cutt off by numerically superior Russian forces near Lódz, Poland. Between the November and December of 1914, the 9th Army took 531 Russian officers prisoner and 28,000 men along with 160 artillery poeces and 220 machine guns. He was also awarded the Oakleaves.
