He was awarded the Pour le Mérite for outstanding leadership and distinguished military planning and succesful operations in association with the Austrian 2nd Army during the Galician campaigns against Russian forces. On 23 July 1915 he was awarded the Oakleaves in recognition during the assault and capture of the heavily defended Russian fortress and strongpoint at Weichsel near Sienno, Poland.
