Awarded the Pour le Mérite for outstanding leadership and distinguished military planning and successful operations on the western front. In addition, the award was also given as recognition of successful leadership in driving of US troops in a counterattack from the heights of Montrebeau.

* He was born in the town of Essen, Germany around 1870 into a family of a rather rich owner/director of one of the coal mines in the area. The photo below shows him standing third from the left and the remainder are his brothers and sisters.
